To be real honest, even keel doesn't excite me as much as the drama of the swing.

But even keel gives us the drama of moving FORWARD.  (We don't move forward much when we're thrashing around).

You've hit on such rich stuff here. I used to read the Tortoise and the Hare (you know, slow and steady wins the race). I HATED the nimshal. I thought the moral was, turtle-speed is for those who can't handle being a hare. Sure, 'stuff' might happen sometimes to the hare, but the battle goes to the swift.

It's only now, in my 50s, that I'm starting to see I might be able to make more progress if I slow down. I hate it hate it hate it. But I'm starting to justify the nimshal in my life, seeing myself as an aging football star whose moves aren't quite as fleet-footed or successful as in younger days. Maybe a little slower, a little more thoughtful in the pacing, etc would start getting me further.

If I could only lose my judgmentalism of those (E$&* turtles....

Thanks for calling me out on my deepest stuff, Eye.. That's where I'm destined to find the real progress.

I had a really really inspiring (for me, at least) thought during davening this morning that I thought I would share.

We ask in Amidah for 'mevorech ha'shanim' -- to bless our years.

Thanks, Briut.  Another allusion in Birchas Hashanim that us addicts may want to keep in mind.  We say "Sabeinu Mituvecha" which the Pathway to Prayer translates along the lines of "satisfy us from your goodness in a way that we don't have to pursue our taavos."

Wow, thinking of myself as an aging football star with a fan club gives me thoughts of... thoughts I shouldn't be thinking of.

But I know what you really meant. So I'll try to drag my mind out of the gutter of the stadium. Darn.

Thanks for your warm thought.

you will have to settle for 'real meaning', just because i don't know any other football stars, aging or otherwise...

and it was meant as a warm thought, like sitting down to watch a good game on a Monday night with some GYE buddies and some cool, tall glasses of Woodford.

a game of backgammon, of course, did you think otherwise?

Zmirry: Oh, goodie. I FAR prefer backgammon to football, anyhow.

I suppose we can all move on now ....

Note to file: It has NOT been a good day. Plan for next time: go to work with a specific set of tasks and a timeline for the day. Free time is recipe for GYE disaster.

hi Briut,
let's take some inventory.
eyes? check
hands? check
ears? check
overall health? check
job/money? check
wife? check
kids? check
intelligence? check
GYE? ................ big fat check
so you say the GYE part was a little rough lately, nu nu, move on, you are human, no?
only thing you should dwell on is how to improve
and don't forget that you have made gimongous strides over the past year or so

so sit back down, fasten your seat belt and crank up the motor
try the air horn
wave to the little kids on the sidewalk
hide the Woodford under the seat
and git trucking

there is also a loan sale going on here:

Yup, ZS. Or as some Saturday Night Live star of decades ago said (was it Steve Martin? Gilda Ratner? Oy, the brain cells wasted on shtiut that could have been given over the Yiddishkeit!)...

Hashem Been Verrry Verrry Gooood to Me.

Everything's gonna be alright. And maybe the sun'll come out tomorrow!

Thanks for the pep talk.

i think the message in there is that He has been very good to you/me/everybody because He loves us. even when things are tough it is still His love.

easy to write but to feel it is a whole different ballgame...

regardless, you sound good and judging from the past the sun WILL come up again...

Commission? Commission off of what amount?

So if I'm achieving new levels of closeness to Him today on the plane of ruchnius, why don't I get some phone calls bringing me some new business on the plane of gashmius?

Is it wrong to not just "believe" (emunah blah blah blah) but to "expect Him" (bitachon, like an insurance policy) to bring in a little money this week? It's not as a tit-for-tat reward, and it's not as a little kid seeking a lollipop, but it IS in the interest of raising all these little kinderlach and paying their tuition.

Shouldn't there be more of this bracha coming around to all of us here who are fighting the good battle? Or, if somehow He has something bigger and better in mind for us, to at least share that information with us? Oy.

Briut, in the past you have posted about how the RBS'O would send you big $ when you asked Him. Maybe He is graduating you to a deeper level of trust.

I find the same question bubbling up from deep down from places i don't frequent in my mind. Why can't He give me this and that? Why does this have to be like that? et cetera.

We can ask Him directly, and it will probably feel great to do so, but for the answer we will have to really take whatever He gives.
