This is a moiradige article which I was thinking about writing myself, but since I am not an expert on the 12 steps, I'm glad that Rabbi Dr. A. J. Twerski Shlit"a did.

The question of yes church/no church is discussed in the GYE handbook on page 32:


Even if the group meetings are held in side rooms of a church building, Rav Shmuel Kaminetsky
rules that the behaviors we are trying to break free of are by far more severe, and therefore if it is
necessary, one should not hesitate to join a 12-Step group because of this (barring the main
sanctuary).


The Rabbi only started with the "another human" because that was where the oilam's kashe is from.

I'm locking this thread because its purpose was really to serve as a link, and not a place to discuss what the Rabbi actually said.
