personal donation question 05 Jul 2014 02:21 #234671

Hi Everyone, I've run into a problem with my motivational giving. I currently don't don't have a paycheck am wracking up a large debt from my motivational giving. I'm worried it's not working and that I'm just setting myself up to fail on multiple levels. I figured my suggested donation should be large so that I don't slip, but when I slip, I slip multiple times at once. It's come to almost $120 for slipping four times in one week. As a student with limited monetary resources, What do I do to improve this situation? I hope I don't seem like the type of person who's just trying to get outta paying his debt; that's not my intention. I will have some money over the summer; I'm just trying to figure some alternatives.

Should I keep up this monetary amount? I really liked the idea that this money should be a Middah K'neged Middah.

Do I alter my suggested donation? I've heard that putting financial stress on yourself/ (dept) is also a sin. That being said, should I still be paying off the $120???

Comments and responses are warmly and encouragingly desired. I'm sure other people can relate to this as well.

Congratulations on your first post, don't be a stranger!

I'm sorry if I'm missing something.

If paying out doesn't seem to be helping, why are you still doing it?

Putting yourself deeper and deeper in debt doesn't make any sense to me. More debt brings more stress, more stress brings more acting out.

If you want to stick with this method, please please please make it an amount you can afford.

Welcome as well.

If you accepted to pay the money it can be like a vow which must be kept.
If there are extenuatin' circumstances you can discuss with a Rav about it.

Regardin' the future, I agree with Skep.

Let us know about the actions you are takin' to avoid future slips.

Thanks for the comments Skeptical and Cordnoy. I did reduce the amount, and I'll be sure to let you know about my progress. I'm still trying to find adequate ways to find my "off switch" when I'm hit by the Yetzer Horah. Maybe I'll look into a few other forums for ideas? Thanks again.
