Plan ahead

Monday, 11 December 2017

One can help oneself by preparing for upcoming situations. I heard from Horav Simcha Schustal ZT"L at a siyum of a Yarchei Kallah in Lakewood the yesod of the Mesillas Yesharim of זהירות שלא בשעת מעשה: if you recognize what to do in certain situations, you can then program your mind so that when it happens, you already know what to do. This way, it is much easier to overcome the יצר הרע involved because you made your mind up already before it happened. If, for example, one pIans what to do if all of a sudden a car is coming at you, you may very well apply your plan and do what is necessary to save yourself.

This can also be applied to driving on the streets in the summer, where the vast majority of passersby are immodestly dressed. That means that על פי רוב it will be אסור according to הלכה to look to the side of the street where pedestrians are walking. Being aware of this enables one to logically condition oneself to look only at the road and not at pedestrians. Anyone who makes this calculation will find it much easier for oneself.
