The Disease of Perfectionism

Dov writes: A sweet GYE member who has been clean for 270 days, is going crazy about his davening being distracted sometimes. After giving him about 2 months to absorb the fact that his problem is simple arrogance, he finally opened up and admitted it. Now he feels like there is just no point. Dov responds:

Perfectionism has no place in sanity - many people can see that.

But then why is it that when we inject the words 'avodas Hashem' into the equation, all of a sudden perfectionism becomes sane? And why is it that so many obviously sick people (who are often addicts no less!) insist that it is not only suddenly sane, not only beautiful, but even absolutely necessary?

Is this not suspicious?

Do we not even see the sickness that we have?

The Ba'al Shem Tov and the Maggid after him said, "One can serve Hashem right from where he is standing right now." And rephrased it to: "One can ONLY serve Hashem from where he stands right now."
